They continue, “Little did Kelly know, Kelly had swiped right in an apartment just a mile away.” “Two right swipes equal a match,” they said. They set up a coffee date in Houston. The couple recalls that they were driving the same car and knew their future was in good hands. We chatted for hours, and we felt an immediate connection. After a few more dates, we became inseparable.”

According to the couple

According to the couple, the proposal was made in July 2020 after a much-needed vacation following the isolation caused by COVID-19. Kelly had been planning for this moment for a long time. Heather shares that Kelly was gifted a diamond by her mother, which she and her mother had worn for generations. She created the most beautiful engagement ring. Kelly finally planned a weekend getaway at a Memorial City hotel. The couple recalls that Heather expected to have a weekend with Kelly and her two best friends but was surprised by the beautiful proposal. Kelly lured Heather up to the roof under the pretense of taking sunset photos before dinner. Kelly and his friends set up drapes, candles and roses for Heather. Heather says that the most important detail was that Kelly had made arrangements for family and friends who couldn’t join us because of the pandemic to be on Zoom calls to experience the moment with them. There were many emotions, laughters, and heartfelt words, making it easy to say “yes to forever.”

Wedding planning was minimalistic

Their vision for wedding planning was minimalistic, elegant, and modern. The Grove, their venue, was to be a mix of neutrals and lush greenery. The couple shared that they chose the venue for its urban-meets garden feel. It is located in Discovery Green, Houston’s heart. The deck on the second floor overlooks a grove oak trees and the backdrop of tall city buildings.

On April 3, 2021, they said “I do” to 85 people. The ceremony and reception were planned by them primarily. They share that the planning process was initially stressful because they had never planned an event this large before and didn’t know where to begin. We tried to remember that not everything had to be perfect. For day-of coordination, they enlisted Heather Alana Johnson from Epoch Co+. Heather was invaluable in setting up the venue, organizing the rehearsal, and making sure that the night ran according to plan. She made sure that we had fun and didn’t feel overwhelmed by any of the hiccups throughout the day.

Marriott Marquis Houston

They were ready to go and booked a block of rooms at the Marriott Marquis Houston. It is a short walk from the venue and close enough to the airport for guests traveling from out of town. They had enough space to prepare each other with their wedding parties in the Presidential Suite, which boasts a stunning terrace that overlooks the Texas-shaped pool.

Kelly was emotional as she wrote her vows for the ceremony. For beauty preparation, Kelly called Naz at The Barber Effect to cut her hair and those of her “broomsmen”. Finishing off, she spritzed Abercrombie and Fitch Fierce, her favorite scent.

A navy tuxedo jacket with peak lapels, black tuxedo pants and black suede loafers was her choice. She also chose a bow tie. Heather says that her initials were embroidered on her coat, and the date of her wedding was engraved on her collar. Her broomsmen gave her a pair cufflinks and her mother gave her her diamond earrings for her wedding day.

Heather, the bride, did her own makeup at the wedding. She says, “I wanted a classic look but it didn’t feel too make-up.” “I wanted to highlight my features so I added eyelashes to give it a more bold look.”

The deep V at the back of my gown was stunning, especially when framed by the cape. Heather says that she wanted to complement her dress, and not hide it. I chose a low, sleek ponytail to keep it chic and a pearl accent for elegance. Her nails were polished light pink, and she wore Versace Bright Crystal. She says, “This was the fragrance my wife bought me when I first started dating.” “I have worn this scent ever since.”
